Journey

Journey
  • 2005-10
ER training at Taipei Veterans General Hospital
Residency life meant living right next to the hospital: seeing patients like mad on shift, collapsing into bed off shift. I'd bought my own car and drove it maybe once a month — it sat in the parking lot until the battery died 😅 I'm grateful for four years of rigorous training at Taipei VGH. When I later went out into the world on my own, I wasn't afraid.
  • 2010-7
Leaving Taipei VGH for the countryside — Zhudong VH
I moved to Zhudong Veterans Hospital, a district hospital at the far end of Provincial Highway 68. Medical and surgical patients came in at roughly 1:1. The hospital had plenty of resident cats we could feed, until a certain senior official decided they spread disease and had them all caught and caged. Things I remember well: a cobra showing up at my front door, the great food at the Zhudong Hakka market, and helping run a clinic at the Leshan radar station.
  • 2011-12
Leaving Zhudong for eastern Taiwan — Yuli VH
I spent about 4 years in the east. We used to joke about it: great mountains, great water, great boredom. But the soil out east really does stick to you. The sky and the air there are different from anywhere else — so comfortable you want to stay forever. Step outside at night and the sky is full of stars. Yuli watermelons, Yuli noodles, Dapo Pond in Chishang, the rice straw of Fuli, Luye in Taitung. Every day off, I'd drive either south or north to go exploring and soak in the scenery. Thank you, eastern Taiwan, for four years of memories that will last a lifetime.
  • 2015-10
National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Hospital
So that our two kids could have an education outside the conventional school system, I left familiar surroundings once again and set off on an unfamiliar road. I bought the first home of my life — a farmhouse in the middle of the rice fields. We've been through several big typhoons there; I no longer know how to put all the ups and downs into words. All I can do is thank heaven and cherish everything I have now. As of 2024 it's been seven years. Sometimes I wonder how many more years I'll feel that emergency medicine is a road I can keep walking.
  • 2024
    To be continued
Will another road appear, waiting for me to walk it?

The day a cobra came to my door: see this post (in Chinese).
